Final Fantasy XI: Online

So. Bought FFXI. Over two hours after I first put the DVD in my Xbox 360, and I still have another hour and a half before I can even play the game.

Certainly a new experience, albeit a daunting one.

Imagine giving this to a child for a birthday or something; they'll want to play straight away, but they won't be able to until mummy or daddy installs it on the 360 and enters in their credit card details / address details, etc.

It doesn't even use the 360's own text entry methods -- the controller-driven on-screen-keyboard is horrible, and uses weird key combinations (presumably similar to the PS2 controls, so that Square Enix could use the 360 version just as easily?). The setup process alone practically needs a USB keyboard, and was nothing short of painful with the controller.

Tomorrow, it looks like I'll be picking up a USB keyboard.

I hope the game is worth all this. If not, it'll be going on eBay once my 30 day trial runs out. Stay tuned for all this and more!

as someone who has played both ffxi and world of warcraft i would sooner go through the trouble for WoW. i dunno how the newest expansions are faring, but I played ffxi with my ps2 and it just got SO OLD. It is so much work, but you might be up to it. Let me know how you like it.

It's *REALLY* difficult to get started out -- you don't have enough gil, and you can't complete missions to get more because you don't have enoughg gil to complete them... I'm not sure how long I'll keep it for, but now I'm started it's a little better.
