Wow, this is interesting...

From Slashdot:
"The students at Copenhagen's new IT University will soon be guided by invisible, but talkative digital agents, known as ghosts or Disembodied Location-specific Conversational Agents. The ghosts are to compete amongst themselves for privileges such as better vocabulary or the ability to clone themselves. Ignored ghosts can die out completely. This project is a lot more serious than it sounds at face value - several papers have been published already."

Sounds slightly unnerving, how do they expect that to work?

Possibly by having something like this:

Ghosts could live in different areas of different buildings of the campus and they'd know who was near them because detectors in the ceiling would be able to detect the student's unique id badge.

Kind of how your external door key works, except, say on a 10 metre range as opposed to a 10cm range with your digital keyfob.
