FAQ 304 has just been created in response to the many "stop e-mailing me" requests that have been on the board lately. It addresses users who have an account and haven't unsubscribed or deleted, as well as non-users who are getting spam about LJ accounts.

Please feel free to post to [info]lj_userdoc or open a Documentation request if you see anything that can be improved.

More dosemu fun

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
I have Master of Magic running at high speed and with working PCM sound under dosemu. But I can't seem to get MIDI working. The weird thing about dosemu is that it has no internal MIDI support, so it writes MIDI data to a file (~/.dosemu/run/dosemu-midi). If I set MoM to use SoundBlaster Pro (later), the MIDI file is created but it's empty. If I set MoM to use General MIDI, the file contains Roland SysEx data (according to file).

If I understand correctly, when MoM tries to use the SB to play MIDI, it would normally do so via wave table mapping provided by a driver like AWEUTIL.COM. But dosemu won't load the AWEUTIL driver, and it has no MIDI emulation of its own, so nothing is written to the dosemu-midi file.

So what I need is a way to play the SysEx file. If that even makes sense... I'm not completely sure what SysEx is. Timidity says it's not a MIDI file, midid dumps a bunch of stuff to stdout and exits without playing any sound, and amidi just pauses for a few seconds and exits. I think the problem might be with my system's ability to play MIDI, but I'm not sure. (Timidity plays regular MIDI files via wavetable synthesis, so the fact that it works on other files doesn't mean much.)

I've tried running it in dosbox, and it works, but it's extremely slow and the sound quality is terrible. I've tried setting cycles to auto (3000), 10000, 25000, 50000, and max, and at all settings I still get crackles and lag. Also, dosbox takes control of the X mouse pointer and doesn't let it move out of its own window. For that reason alone, I'm determined to stick with dosemu...

EDIT: I converted the raw SysEx dump to MIDI using the syx2midi DOS app found here, and it does contain the expected music. Now I just need a way to convert or play it in realtime...

RTE breakage update

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 3:23 PM
The new RTE isn't working right. (In other news, water is reported to be wet. We're still investigating.) Here is everything I've seen this weekend. There are older bugs too, but I hope this will help you when working in Entries to know what's been reported and what hasn't been.

Additions in comments are very welcome. We want to get this thing fixed, not just for the users, but especially because of the huge workload this feature creates for Entries volunteers.

* [LJSV-648] RTE doesn't load at all in Safari 4
* [LJSV-792] Nowhere to enter text for an lj-cut popup, many browsers
* [LJSV-796] HTML editor is loading instead of user's default RTE in IE7 and FF 3
* [LJSV-797] RTE spacing and indentation aren't working as expected in IE7 and FF 2 & 3

(On #2, theory is that they've got old JS cached and we should be doing advanced cache clear with them as a next step.)

Those are the main three I saw this weekend. Older stuff we're still seeing (again, feel free to add to this list):

* Multiple lj-cut tags can get added to a post (does anyone have the Jira # for this? I can't find it)

Twitter me this...

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
Twitterbillboard
So apparently an Alabama television station isn't very pleased with their plan to have their digital billboard show live tweets.  Since said billboard shows off their three anchors.  And ended up with this tweet.  They're so upset, that they suspended the general manager and news manager.

Stupid people.  Um so if you are in charge of tweeting the news and three are accused of rape and it's a big story are you supposed to say -- no, we better not tell our followers THAT story because we've got that darned digital billboard with the three anchors on it.  Or wait until we have several stories to add at once so it won't be the one to show on the billboard?  I wouldn't even think of the billboard to be honest, if my job was to keep up the twitter page.  And people were suspended for -- keeping up their followers with the news.  Good job.  If you want them to be so current that you're even twittering people the news on digital billboards, this is what will happen.  You can't then suspend people for it.  Jackasses.

Firefox/Internet Connection Problem

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Hello everyone,

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and this is the first time I've seen this problem. Basically, it's Firefox's (ver 3.5.5) problem because there are certain websites (realmadridtalk.com, justintv.com, ebay.ph) I cannot access unless I use a proxy. My FF preferences are technically at a default, allowing java scripts and the "No proxy" setting is ticked for the network connection. I've also installed Opera and was able to access a channel on JustinTV but when I tried again, it's back to the same problem.

It always shows this:

http://img101.photolava.com/2009/11/29/screenshot-oops-this-link-appears-to-be-broken-www-oleole-com-blogs-realmad-2ok5qu8j.png

I installed NoScript and AdBlock Plus yesterday when this happened, thinking that it's because of the two add ons, I removed them but the same thing happened. My problem (on not being able to access certain sites) is not limited to me only. I tried asking friends (using Firefox) through chat to access the 3 sites I've mentioned and they gave the same results. My other friend who tried it with IE however, made realmadridtalk.com worked.

If anyone can enlighten me on this, I would really appreciate it. I know basic troubleshooting and I've Googled around to no avail.

Someone from ubuntuforums.org suggested that it might be because of my ISP but my other two friends whom I asked to access the same sites I mentioned, they got the same results (one is using broadband and one is DSL, from two diff services).

Dentist wasn't THAT bad.

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 5:30 PM

So my trip to the dentist was for three things really -- I was SURE this ancient filling was going bad as that tooth tends to be sensitive / feels almost like there is pressure on it.  Nope, it's good.   Then there was a tooth last year that had discoloration but wasn't a cavity, wanted it checked as it occasionally gets sensitive too, so was worried that it turned to a cavity.  It had.  And third, I had a bump on the floor of my mouth.  Before the appointment, my mom was like so you think you have an abscess?  I didn't think so.  Those are pus, right?  Softer?  And usually a toothache goes with those, right?  None of that applies.  This is a hard lump.  Just noticed it in the last few weeks.  Feels almost like bone, it's that tough.  Mom had thought oh, umm yeah that doesn't sound good but could still be just an abscess.  Don't need the toothache and if they get infected or whatever, they can get hard too.  Wrong to abscess but also wrong to it sounding not good.  It's fine.  Think that was my dentist's exact words.  Or maybe it's normal.  Something like that.  She said people get them all of the time, including her brother.  They can even grow and be normal still.  Some kind of tissue build up or something.  Whatever, I lost track at it's normal.  But in a few months if I'm still concerned she can have them cut it out of my mouth to biopsy it.  Umm.  let's see - doesn't hurt, doctor says it's normal, isn't an abscess, isn't something worse like cancer, but if I'd like I can have it cut out.  Nope.  Think I'll trust the doctor for now.  Otherwise there's no reason to do that unless the appearance changes, starts to hurt, etc.    Now I am done with the dentist for a few months.  Still have those extractions I was supposed to get done last year.  Oopsie.  No insurance sucks.    That could be why that one tooth feels funky actually.  The broken tooth is affecting others.   Like, they're fine -- but it's funkiness is radiating to them.  Or whatever.

X-rays = worst part of the dentist, I swear.  Even they say I seem to handle it the worst.  Or when they've been digging around in my mouth for awhile.   Like both the dentist and assistant at the same time.  But I can calm down pretty quickly during that.  X-rays though, I just gag like mad when they stick those full x-ray things in the back of my mouth, then tell me to bite down slowly.  I wanna gag now just thinking of it, actually.   The only thing that makes me wanna gag worse is thinking of that time I had the bite tube put in before they medicated me enough, for the scope procedure.  *shiver*

Otherwise it was okay news.   Last time I needed gum treatment.  This time that's good though she warned me to be sure I'm brushing in circles not across as my gums did seem sensitive and she says everyone brushes across which is a no no for gums apparently.

My MacBook charger has been bitten a tiny bit of damage and now isn't working. No green light, nothing. My kitten did it I suspect. She did it to another charger too I'm absolutely gutted.
Is it safe to buy a MacBook pro unofficial charger on eBay?
Thanks

minimum system requirements for sims 3?

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 7:47 PM
hello! i have a white macbook purchased in 2008 and i'd like to play the sims 3. i've looked up the minimum system requirements, and it looks like so far, le macbook will be fine-- i have a 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo processor, 4GB ram, an intel gma x3100 video card, 220+GB free HD space, and i'm running snow leopard 10.6.2. i've heard that the sims 3 has some pretty heavy-duty graphics that can still lag on some speedier machines, so i'm curious what others' experiences have been in playing the sims 3 on their macs (esp. if your mac has similar specs to mine). also, what do you think of the sims 3? i downloaded the sims 3 app for my iphone and i'm pretty addicted! thanks :)

[G/Unk] Another French Request

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 2:39 AM
I already answered this French request, but she re-greened.

The user wanted to know how to communicate with a specific user. I gave her the FAQ 270 and added more information in my answer to make it more clear (you can see exactly what I wrote in my IC in English) because the FAQ is not translated in French.

My problem is that the user keep saying that she does not know how to contact that specific user. I'm not sure how my answer could be more clear than what I wrote. She apparently does not have a journal, so I guess I could be more specific by telling her that she has to select the "Anonymous option" to be able to leave a comment on an entry. (I verified the journal in question and the user does allow Anonymous comments) Does anyone have another suggestion ? I could translate the FAQ 270 in French, but there is no instructions, it is more general information.

Looking for Old Icon Set

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
So, between new computers and over pruning hard drives, I have lost one of my favorite Icon Sets from ages ago.
I THINK I got it from the Pixelpalooza submissions in the early 00's. (And if you know what I am talking about then I am asking you nicely, HAVE YOU SEEN THESE ICONS??) :)

I only have one icon from the set still attached to a folder -

I loved this set and I feel reallly stupid for losing them.
The set was basically someone's interpretations of flowers if created by graphic artists. Several looked like pinwheel type creations. One was multicolored and is specifically the one I am looking for.

If you happen to have this collection please please please contact me. Thanks.

x-posted to a couple of places.

Computer to TV?

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 8:38 AM
Is it possible to hook my computer up to the TV to watch shows from my computer on my TV? I have a TV output and AV cables that are for PC to TV, but when I try to connect it doesn't seem to work. Is there a certain program I have to download first?

Thank you!

edit: I am running ubuntu 8.10

PulseAudio and dosemu

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 2:35 AM
The SB emulation in dosemu was designed to work with OSS, so it attempts to open /dev/dsp directly. I've tried running it with -s, wrapping it with padsp, and both at the same time, but it still cannot access the sound card.

kevin@aphrodite:~/.dosemu$ padsp xdosemu -D +S
kevin@aphrodite:~/.dosemu$ cat boot.log | grep SB
SB: SB Initialisation
SB: Initialisation - Base 0x220, IRQ 5, DMA 1, HDMA 5
SB: FM Initialisation
SB:[Linux] FM Driver Initialisation Called
SB: Resetting SB
SB: Disabling Speaker
SB: Speaker already disabled
SB:[Linux] SB Driver Initialisation Called
SB: /dev/dsp open failed, Device or resource busy
SB:[Linux] No sounddevice for SoundBlaster emulation found.
SB: Resetting FM
SB:[Linux] FM Driver Reset Called
kevin@aphrodite:~/.dosemu$

Any suggestions? I've also tried dosbox, but the sound is choppy and it takes over the mouse until it's closed.

ETA: lsof /dev/dsp reports nothing.

ETA2: After trying many more things that didn't work, I met with partial success by double-wrapping dosemu with padsp and aoss, like so:

LD_PRELOAD="$LD_PRELOAD libaoss.so libpulsedsp.so" dosemu -D +S

PCM output is working, but there's still no MIDI or mixer.
